NVON
The acronym NVON stands –in translation- for Dutch Association for Science Education.
Members of NVON are individuals who are either actively involved in or feel related to classroom teaching in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, General Science (ANW) and other subjects related to these.
NVON has approximately 4000 members, which equals roughly 70 % of all full time science teachers.
NVON dates back from 1975, as a result of the merge of the associations for teachers in Physics and Chemistry (Velines) and Biology (Velebi), at the time.
NVON is the Association for
1. all teachers and Technical Educational Assistants (TOA’s) involved in teaching in
Upper Secondary Schools: Biology, Physics, Chemistry and General Science Lower Secondary and Primary Education (PE), as well as in Teacher Training for PE: Nature Education
2. everyone else, interested in Science Education.
Related subjects, which also are a NVON concern are Environmental Education, Material Science and Technological Education.
NVON includes five so called subject specific sections related to respectively Biology, Physics, Chemistry, ANW and TOA.
In addition, NVON has particular committees which includes both general and managerial committees and committees that are related to particular specific subject sections.
The chairpersons to the specific subject sections together with the members of the Executive Board constitute the so called General Board.
Also, NVON has so called regional groups, in which members meet who live in particular regional sections of Holland. A major event during which NVON members meet to have the annual meeting and take part in all kinds of activities related to getting to know the state of the art in their academic fields, is the annual NVON congress. By tradition, the NVON congress is hosted by one of the Dutch universities.
